Volcano in a bottle
Carbonated Chemical reactions
Mixing a liquid and a solid to make a gas.
What will happen if I add Bicarbonate of soda to vinegar
Hypothesis- What might happen? It might blow up!
Materials
Method
Put 150mls of vinegar in a bottle
Add a few drops of food colouring
Add a few drops of detergent (creates the foam)
Quickly add 1.5 teaspoons of bicarbonate soda to the vinegar
Watch the reaction of the bicarbonate of soda as it mixes with the vinegar
Experiment-The bicarbonate of soda combines with the vinegar to produce bubbles of carbon dioxide which is one of the gases that come out of real volcanoes. The detergent makes the mixture extra bubbly and by the food colouring gives the ‘Lava’ a realistic colour.
Conclusion- Bicarbonate of soda reacts with vinegar to make carbon dioxide gas. The carbon dioxide bubbles up with the detergent and makes foam that comes out of the bottle like lava in a real volcanic eruption
